What is the commute really like from Brentwood to downtown Vancouver?

From Brentwood Town Centre station, the SkyTrain gets you to Waterfront in 18 minutes of scheduled train time, with one transfer at Commercial-Broadway. At rush hour I'd budget about 25 minutes station to station once you add the wait and the platform change. A weekday rush-hour trip costs $4.20 on a Compass Card as of July 1, 2026.

How do you get from Brentwood to downtown on the SkyTrain?

Take the Millennium Line west toward VCC-Clark and get off at Commercial-Broadway. Change to a westbound Expo Line train toward Waterfront.

TransLink's published station-to-station times, effective January 5, 2026:

  • Brentwood to Commercial-Broadway: 8 minutes

  • Commercial-Broadway to Burrard: 8 minutes

  • Commercial-Broadway to Waterfront: 10 minutes

That puts Burrard 16 minutes of train time from Brentwood and Waterfront 18. The Millennium Line doesn't run into downtown, so every Brentwood trip downtown includes that one change.

Bar chart of scheduled SkyTrain train time to Waterfront station, from TransLink's timetable effective January 5, 2026. Gilmore 16 minutes, Brentwood Town Centre 18 minutes, Holdom 20 minutes, all with one transfer at Commercial-Broadway. Metrotown 20 minutes with no transfer. Times exclude waiting for the second train.
Brentwood-area stations vs Metrotown, SkyTrain time to Waterfront

How long does it take in real life?

Longer than 18 minutes, because the timetable doesn't count the transfer.

At weekday rush hour, TransLink runs the Millennium Line every 3 to 4 minutes and the Expo Line every 2 to 5 minutes between Waterfront and King George. Midday, both lines drop to every 6 minutes. So at peak you're usually waiting a few minutes at Commercial-Broadway, plus the walk between platforms. That's how I get to roughly 25 minutes station to station at rush hour.

Add your walk at each end. A building 2 minutes from the station and an office next to Burrard gives you about a half-hour door to door. A 12-minute walk to Brentwood station and another 10 at the downtown end puts you closer to 45.

That's my read of the timetable. Crowding at Commercial-Broadway at 8am can mean letting a full train go by.

Which Brentwood-area station is closest to downtown?

The Brentwood area has three Millennium Line stations, and each one changes the trip by about 2 minutes. Scheduled train time to Waterfront, including the change at Commercial-Broadway:

  • Gilmore: 16 minutes

  • Brentwood Town Centre: 18 minutes

  • Holdom: 20 minutes

For comparison, Metrotown is 20 minutes to Waterfront on the Expo Line with no transfer at all. Brentwood is 2 minutes faster on paper, but Metrotown riders get to stay in one seat.

When you're comparing two condos, check each one's walk to the station. A 10-minute difference there outweighs the 2 minutes between stations.

How much does the Brentwood to downtown commute cost?

Brentwood is in fare Zone 2, and downtown Vancouver is Zone 1. Adult Compass Card fares since July 1, 2026:

  • 2-zone trip: $4.20

  • 1-zone trip: $2.85

  • 2-zone monthly pass: $156.70

  • 1-zone monthly pass: $117.20

SkyTrain trips are charged by zone only on weekdays before 6:30pm. Any trip starting after 6:30pm on a weekday, and all weekend travel, costs the 1-zone fare. Bus trips are always 1-zone.

If both of your commute trips start before 6:30pm, 21 workdays is 42 two-zone trips, or $176.40 at $4.20 each. The 2-zone pass is $156.70, so it pays off once you take 38 or more peak trips in a month. Anyone commuting 5 days a week in the office should probably buy the pass.

Living in Burnaby instead of Vancouver costs you $39.50 a month on the pass, the gap between the 2-zone and 1-zone price. That's $474 a year.

Should I drive from Brentwood to downtown instead?

I wouldn't, for a 9-to-5 downtown job.

Drive times on Hastings or Highway 1 swing too much with traffic for me to give you an honest number, and you'd be paying for downtown parking on top of it. The scheduled train time is the same at 8am as at 2pm.

Driving makes more sense if you work somewhere the SkyTrain doesn't reach well, or your hours run late.

Will the Broadway Subway change the Brentwood commute?

Only if you work along Broadway.

The Broadway Subway extends the Millennium Line 5.7 kilometres from VCC-Clark to Arbutus, with six new underground stations. The Province says it's on schedule to open in fall 2027, and that VCC-Clark to Arbutus will take 11 minutes.

For a Brentwood buyer, that means one train with no transfer along Broadway as far as Arbutus. Brentwood to VCC-Clark is 9 minutes today, so by my math that's about 20 minutes of train time to Arbutus.

It won't change the downtown trip. You'll still change to the Expo Line at Commercial-Broadway to reach Burrard or Waterfront.

So is Brentwood a good place to live if you work downtown?

Yes. On TransLink's timetable, Brentwood is within 2 minutes of the fastest Burnaby station to Waterfront (Gilmore, at 16). The transfer is the only real cost.

It also matches the price picture. In my Metrotown vs Brentwood comparison, 2 bedroom condos built in 2006 or later that sold for $800,000 or less had a median of $708,000 in Brentwood Park between March 14 and August 21, 2026, the same as Metrotown, with slightly bigger units. See which is the better condo buy for the full numbers.

If you'd rather never transfer, Metrotown gives you that for 2 extra minutes. If you work on Broadway, Brentwood gets better in 2027.

For a full-time downtown commute, usually yes. The 2-zone pass is $156.70 a month. At $4.20 a trip, it pays off once you take 38 or more two-zone trips in a month, and 5 office days a week gets you to 42.
